Remote Working and Digital Setup for a Liveaboard Circumnavigation

When this client came to us, they were preparing for a major lifestyle change. A professional couple in their 40s, they were planning to move onboard their yacht and set off on a circumnavigation — while continuing to work remotely in their existing careers. To make that possible, they needed a reliable digital setup that would allow them to stay connected, remain fully operational for work, and also build their own online presence around their sailing adventure.

The first priority was connectivity. We helped them install and configure Starlink to provide a high-speed internet connection that could support both day-to-day office work and content creation while onboard. Choosing the right subscription was an important part of the solution, as their needs would change over time depending on whether they were coastal cruising or offshore on longer passages. We set the system up in a way that allowed their package and usage to be adapted as their travel plans evolved, giving them the flexibility they needed without unnecessary cost.

Once reliable internet access was in place, we created a complete remote working environment that allowed them to stay in contact with their employers and continue working seamlessly from the boat. Microsoft 365 became the core of the setup, giving them their own professional domain, email accounts, and a central platform for managing documents, communication, and collaboration. At the same time, we linked their onboard systems with their existing employer email environments so they could continue their normal jobs without interruption.

We also implemented a VoIP telephone system that allowed them to combine business and personal communications efficiently. SIP trunk numbers were added for their own use, while the same phone system was also linked to their employers’ office server. This meant they could use the same computer and telephone equipment for both work and personal activity, reducing the amount of hardware required onboard and keeping the setup simple, practical, and space-efficient.

Alongside their working life, the couple also wanted to document their journey and build an online presence around their new sailing lifestyle. We set up their social media structure using business pages so that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Business could all be integrated properly from the outset. This gave them a connected platform for sharing updates, engaging with followers, and building a recognisable identity for their sailing blog venture.

To support this, we also built them a blog website where they could post regular updates about their travels and cruising experiences. In addition, we created a YouTube channel with monetisation enabled so they could publish video blogs and begin developing a longer-term content strategy around their voyage. The aim was not only to help them share their experiences, but also to give them the tools to grow an audience and potentially generate income from their content over time.

Because content creation was new to them, we also provided practical guidance and training. We showed them how to create and upload video content, understand website and channel statistics, and monitor performance so they could see what was working. We also introduced them to short-form content creation, helping them learn how to produce reels and setting up Canva templates that made the process easier and faster. This reduced the learning curve significantly and allowed them to start publishing confidently without needing advanced design or editing skills.

The finished system gave them exactly what they needed: a seamless onboard office that allowed them to continue working professionally while living at sea. Their work clients had no idea they were no longer sitting in a conventional office, because the systems worked so smoothly through Starlink and the connected remote working platform we created. At the same time, voicemail and communication controls gave them the freedom to step away from work when sailing or passage-making, without losing touch completely.

Overall, this project was about much more than internet onboard a boat. It was about designing a practical, reliable digital lifestyle that allowed two professionals to work, travel, communicate, and build a new online venture — all from the same floating home. By combining connectivity, cloud systems, communications tools, website development, and content training, we helped turn a dream of circumnavigating into a realistic and fully workable way of life.
